As stated the LS-1 is known for cold start piston slap. It is the combination of short skirt pistons and material expansion rates that causes this. Generally, it is nothing to be concerned with and you need not take any special measures.

You will have piston slap if you get off brand vitaras, and face them towards the timing belt... you need true 75mm vitaras, or play it safe and do what most ppl do ( myself included) and bore it out to 75.5mm to ensure a perfect circle, then you won't have to deal with piston slap as long as you point them towards the flywheel.

With LS1 piston slap the noise is there from get go and gets louder and relative to engine RPM until induction / engine case takes over. In other words free revving no load you can definitely hear it.

The LT1 engines are know for "piston slap" and the injectors are quite noisy as well. I've got a similar noise that comes and goes depending on the temperature and the type and age of the oil. It's been there for 25K miles and doesn't seem to be a problem. It's annoying, but every small block I've ever had has had some sort of ticking noise.
